On a little voyage – part three: scotland

“My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.”
― Robert Burns

Moments, thoughts, and things from Oban, Glasgow, Edinburgh and The Castles…

  • Sheep are everywhere – the hills are green with white polka dots
  • We were surprised by the food – Ox and Finch, Crabshakk, Mother India, and Uplands Roast Coffee were all highlights of our time in Glasgow
  • Our tour guide at the Oban Distillery was like a young Hugh Grant.
  • The Carloway Mill Harris Tweed store – where Linda was one week away from her retirement, the quality of the products was amazing, and the back room was piled high with bolts and boxes of fabric – no doubt a fire hazard but a feast for the eyes
  • The quiet grandeur of the University of Glasgow on a rainy Sunday morning
  • The intensity and experience of attending a football match (which the guys did)
  • St. Giles Cathedral – the day was sunny and the stained glass was most impressive in the light
  • Edinburgh and Stirling Castles – takeaway: the tour guide is most important – it’s the stories that bring the castles to life
  • The 246 narrow spiral stairs at Wallace Monument are worth it for the stunning (and windy) views from the top
